  2. README for ttysnoop 0.12c (alpha) -- 21-03-96

  4. [ Version 0.12c is a bugfix release for 0.12. It mainly addresses the
  5. lingering utmp-entries bug that caused users to "remain online" when
  6. doing a 'w' or 'who' command. Apart from a few other minor cleanups,
  7. this version is identical to v0.12. ]
  8.  
  9. This is version 0.12 of ttysnoop for Linux. It introduces one new feature 
  10. and now also has support for shadow passwords. (Thanx to those who mailed 
  11. me the patches)

  13. The package allows you to snoop on login tty's through another tty-device 
  14. or pseudo-tty. The snoop-tty becomes a 'clone' of the original tty, 
  15. redirecting both input and output from/to it.

  17. To install, untar the archive, customize Makefile and config.h and type 
  18. 'make'. If all goes well, type 'make install' next and copy the example 
  19. snooptab.dist file to /etc/snooptab. Edit this new copy and tell your 
  20. getty/telnetd to execute /sbin/ttysnoops as the login program (instead of 
  21. /bin/login). You should then be able to snoop upon the tty's listed in 
  22. /etc/snooptab whevener a user logs in on them.

  30. From v0.11 onwards, user authentication is performed via a password prompt
  31. whenever snooping is done through a pty.
  32.  
  33. From v0.12 onwards, the ttysnoop client supports a suspend/resume key
  34. (default ctrl-\) which suspends/resumes snooping when it is pressed. Might
  35. come in handy when snooping rz/sz sessions. ;)
